Trend Spotting and Communication

One of the most valuable skills in data storytelling is the ability to spot trends in the data and then communicate those trends clearly and convincingly. It’s not enough to analyze the data—you need to highlight meaningful patterns and explain their business impact in a way that your audience can act on.

What Is Trend Spotting?

Trend spotting is the process of identifying consistent patterns or movements in your data over time, across categories, or within groups. These trends could indicate growth, decline, seasonality, correlation, or emerging behavior.

Types of trends to look for:

  • Upward or downward trends (e.g., increasing sales over months)
  • Seasonal trends (e.g., higher traffic on weekends or during festivals)
  • Geographical trends (e.g., one region outperforming another)
  • Behavioral patterns (e.g., user engagement decreasing after app updates)

Being able to detect trends helps uncover hidden insights that might lead to new strategies or warnings of future problems.

Why Is Trend Communication Important?

Once you identify a trend, your next job is to communicate it in a way that:

  • Makes it obvious and understandable to non-technical stakeholders
  • Shows why the trend matters to business goals
  • Leads to a clear recommendation or follow-up question

Even a strong trend can be ignored if it’s not presented with the right context or visual clarity.

How to Spot Trends Effectively

  • Use time series charts (line charts, area charts) for changes over time
  • Group data using categories, regions, or segments to spot comparisons
  • Apply rolling averages or smoothing techniques to highlight direction
  • Compare before and after events (e.g., pre/post campaign performance)

Example:
If average cart value has steadily increased over the last 6 months, you might investigate whether a new loyalty program is influencing it.

How to Communicate Trends Clearly

1. Use the Right Visuals:

  • Line charts are best for continuous time-based trends
  • Bar charts help compare changes across categories
  • Heatmaps can show patterns across two variables (e.g., day of week vs. hour)

2. Add Context:
Don’t just show the trend—explain what it means.
Instead of: “Revenue grew by 10%.”
Say: “Revenue grew by 10% in Q2, driven mainly by new user acquisition in Tier 1 cities.”

3. Use Annotations and Highlights:
Mark the key inflection points, spikes, or dips with labels or callouts. This directs attention and supports your narrative.

4. Focus on the ‘Why’:
Always follow a trend with an explanation or hypothesis. Trends without context don’t lead to action.

Examples of Trend Spotting in Real Use
Trend Identified Possible Interpretation Recommended Action
Increase in bounce rate over 3 months Users not finding landing pages relevant Redesign key pages, improve targeting
Drop in delivery times after app update Operational improvement due to new features Roll out app changes to more regions
Sales spike during a marketing campaign Campaign is successful Increase budget for that channel
Gradual churn increase in premium users Possible dissatisfaction with pricing or value Run user surveys, update pricing strategy
